“Passing Perspective with Death’s Apprentice” is a thought-provoking podcast that breaks down the barriers surrounding death, dying, and grief. Hosted by Death’s Apprentice, an enthusiast and advocate within the death industry, the show invites listeners to explore the often-taboo topics of mortality with curiosity and openness. The podcast offers a unique blend of personal reflections, cultural insights, and practical advice on navigating the complexities of death.
Each episode is anchored by a question of the week and features a poignant quote about death, encouraging listeners to reflect deeply on their own experiences and beliefs. The host’s journey into the realm of death was sparked by a childhood marked by unanswered questions and personal loss, further shaped by a transformative experience following a friend’s suicide. This led to a profound personal exploration, culminating in work as a death doula and author of horror stories—a creative outlet for processing the themes of mortality.
Through candid discussions, the podcast sheds light on cultural perspectives and funeral customs, offering listeners guidance in planning for death and making informed decisions. A highlight of the series is the contribution from Jade Wu, PhD, who delves into the psychology behind the fear of death. Her insights emphasize the impact of attachment styles, cultural attitudes, and personal experiences on one’s perception of mortality.
Listeners are encouraged to examine their own attachment styles and consider therapeutic strategies for coping with death anxiety. Drawing inspiration from Stephen Levine’s “Who Dies? Investigation Conscious Living,” the podcast aims to equip listeners with the tools to engage in meaningful conversations with loved ones about death and prepare for their own end-of-life journeys.

Death's Apprentice didn't start out thinking about death, at least not natural death. Starting out writing horror stories and avoiding facing actual death, she was thrust into the funeral industry during a point in her life of death and rebirth. This was exactly the catalyst needed to find her calling, helping people accept and plan for their inevitable death and feel comfortable talking about it. Through her curiosity about all things death, whether for writing a new story or researching to learn what you can do with your body when you die, she became Death's Apprentice.
